The Quick and Dirty List of What Can Break on Your AC

Have you ever noticed that your air conditioner seems to stop working always at the most inopportune moment? You have guests coming, you are hosting a party, or its the hottest day of the year? Yes, we have noticed this too.

Air conditioners stop working for a whole host of possible potential reasons. It can be as simple as a blown fuse but the majority of problems are caused by regular maintenance being overlooked or ignored. That’s great news because it means that most breakdowns are preventable.

The Quick & Dirty List of What Could Be Going Wrong Inside Your Air Conditioner

Dead Battery on the Thermostat – Due to age the batteries or the thermostat itself can die.

Neglecting to use new filters – The filter not being changed and becoming completely clogged.

Drainage Problems – Overtime the drain can clog up due to dirt and dust and even lint. It can become so clogged that it won’t drain. This inability to drain will fill and overflow the pan. If the pan floods, it can cause water damage.

Freon Leaking – Without refrigerant, your AC cannot cool.

Contacts are Worn Out – These contacts make an electrical connection that starts the compressor and motor. If there’s pitting and arcing on the contact, it is more difficult for the necessary electric current to get started.

Capacitors – Capacitors fire the motor by shocking it into a run.

Compressor – The compressor propels coolant through the coils to carry out heat exchange. If the compressor is broken, the AC unit will not cool your house.

Evaporator coils – Evaporator coils absorb heat from the air and send it back into the house as cold air using a series of air ducts. Corrosion can take place, wearing down the coils.

Condenser Coils – Condensor can become dirty due to the elements in nature. These are the coils located outside with the compressor.
