As with any industry, Heating and cooling installation and repair comes has its own set of terms that aren’t normally in most people’s vocabulary. To a layman, these terms can be confusing. It’s worth it to take the time to get familiar with the lingo before your air conditioner breaks down.
Terms you may hear:
HVAC:
Stands for Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning. HVAC is a blanket term that includes all aspects of air conditioning. It is often used interchangeably with AC (Air Conditioning).
SEER:
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER is the measure of efficiency. It takes in to account how efficient your AC unit is based on how much electricity it requires to reach the level temperature change that has been set.
Air Flow:
This refers to the amount of air that your HVAC unit and ducts can move through your home.
Enthalpy:
A rarely known term by the public. It is used to decide how efficient it is to pull new air in from outside the home for the electrical cost. It refers to the amount of heat in the air based both off of dry air and its water vapor.
VAV or Variable Air Volume:
Refers to a system that changes how much air it pulls in based on temperature requirements instead of maintaining a flat throughput at all times. They are very efficient units.
