If you are a Floridian you don’t think of your attic crawl space as an actual attic in the way they do up north. There isn’t a storage space or an extra potential usable area. What we have here is simply access in case of repair or modification on the home.
Surprisingly in our heated tropical environment, many attic spaces are not constructed with good proper insulation. This can cause your home to lose heat in the winter months and leak cold air in the summer. Overall this makes your home less comfortable.
Along with the issues of livability, of course, they go hand in hand with your ever higher electric bill. If the warm or cold air is seeping out, the bill rises.
There is an easy fix. Redo or add to your insulation.
How Attic Insulation Works
If air is escaping through your attic, your AC system has to work harder to heat or cool your home. This creates a greater demand for energy. Installation of higher quality insulation will help keep the conditioned air inside of the home saving energy and money.
Types Of Attic Insulation
Insulation is rated based on thermal resistance (R-Value). The greater the R-Value, the better the insulation. The depth of insulation suggested for your home depends on where you live, but as a general guideline, homes in a cold climate should have a minimum of R-49 in the attic and warmer climates only require an R-38.
Here are the main kinds of attic insulation:
Roll-on insulation – This is the least expensive type of insulation. It is simple and fast for contractors to install. It is flexible, allowing it to fit tightly between studs, rafters, etc., and the tight fit helps keep the air trapped in the home.
Blown-in insulation – This air carried loose fill is considered more efficient.
Blown-in attic insulation is also moisture proof helping to keep mold and odor from becoming a problem. In Florida that is vital.
Spray foam insulation is regarded to be the most energy-efficient type because it expands and tightly seals all holes where air could possibly leak from. Not only does the spray foam attic insulation create an air-tight seal, but it typically works longer than other types of attic insulation.
If your home feels drafty or your electric bills are higher than you would like them to be we would love to come out and take a look to see what we might be able to upgrade insulation wise on your home to save you money for years to come.
